Travel & Accomodation

Car

Mt Baw Baw is a 2.5 hour drive from Melbourne, 1 hour from the heart of Gippsland, and 3 hours from the Mornington Peninsula.

PLAN THE JOURNEY: Decide which route you will take, make sure you plan where you will fill up your fuel tank before heading up the mountain (there is no petrol station on the mountain!). Don’t rely on your GPS! Some GPS systems don’t work well in the region.

OPTION 1: South Face Road

Access the South Face Road via Moe and Rawson, the South Face Road is not sealed for 25 km, but the road is not as curvy as the Tourist Road. Travel time from Melbourne CBD is 2.5 hours, from Latrobe Valley it’s one hour.

Via Moe from Melbourne:

  1. From the M1, take the turn off at the Moe exit, and then continue via Erica
  2. At Parkers Corner, continue straight onto the Thomson Valley Road
  3. 3 km along, turn left onto South Face Road

Last major fuel stop is at Moe

Via Traralgon from the Valley:

  1. Turn at the set of traffic lights at McDonald’s in the town centre of Traralgon
  2. Travel along Grey Street and follow signs to Tyers/Walhalla (C477, C481, C461)
  3. Continue on the C481 through Rawson
  4. At Parkers Corner, turn right onto the Thomson Valley Road
  5. 3 km along, turn left onto South Face Road

Last major fuel stop is Traralgon

OPTION 2: Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road

A beautiful drive through the National Park then up narrow and windy roads to Mt Baw Baw. Travel time from Melbourne CBD is 2.5 hours.

  1. The turn off from the Princes Hwy (M1) is at the Drouin/Mt Baw Baw exit
  2. Continue along via Noojee along the Main Neerim Rd (C426)
  3. Follow this road through Noojee to connect to the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road (C426)
  4. Travel through Icy Creek and Tanjil Bren before reaching the resort gates

Last major fuel stops is at Longwarry (before you exit the Hwy)

OPTION 3: Scenic Suburbs

Picturesque and more direct from eastern suburbs. Travel time from Lilydale is 2 hours. Your best option for the far eastern suburbs and a more scenic drive is to travel along with the Warburton Highway to Yarra Junction, then turn off onto the Tourist Road near Noojee (C426).

  1. Travel along the Warburton Hwy to Yarra Junction
  2. At Yarra Junction turn right onto the Yarra Junction-Noojee Road
  3. Follow this through Powelltown and Noojee, where you join the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road
  4. Continue on through Icy Creek and Tanjil Bren until you reach the entry gate

Last available fuel is Yarra Junction
