The True Spirit of Alpine Australia is unique in its approach to a trail running event in that it encompasses two untimed events! This means that they are not a race but more an opportunity to get out in the great outdoors and take in the fresh air, savour the awe inspiring scenery and learn a bit about the history of the area and enjoy the company of others.

For adults of all ages, the Romancing the Sunset 10 km run/walk is an out and back marked course to the top of the Orchard Chair lift, to watch the sunset whilst sipping bubbly, accompanied with biscuits and cheese and learning about the area’s history, before heading back to the Village Square.

For the kids there is the Spirit Dash, a 3.5 km run/walk on an out and back course from Hotham Village Square to the summit of Mount Hotham to watch the sunset, get a glow stick and run back by torchlight to the village. This will be a marked course. All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

On the Sunday we have the more traditional Running Wild trail events covering 25 and 40 km and taking in historic huts and gold digging areas of the high country including: Red Robin Mine, Dibbins Hut, Derrick Hut, Spargos Hut, and the Cobungra Ditch as well as three peaks—Mt Higginbottom, Mount Hotham and Mount Loch. History, hills, heartache—all in one event.

The 2 short course distances of 3.5 km and 10 km are great for the kids and those just wanting to stretch their legs following scenic walking trails. For the more experienced, the 25 km and 40 km course takes in more challenging and historic runs through the Alpine National Park.

Soak up the pristine alpine environment and challenge yourself to run at an altitude above 1600 meters (join the Mile High club).
